Guides to understanding Black Americans?

Post by mwtichen »

Social media seems to be in full swing producing content about "black fatigue" or "race realism". It reminds me of the "red pill", where influencers keep making content about female nature. There's truth in what they say, though people get bogged down in it, just angrily reacting to it instead of learning to accept it.

My question is, is there some sort of guide or "pill" to safely navigating relations with black Americans?

For instance, I've lived in the South all my life (some 41 years) and I only have a few observations I can share:
  • For most groups, obesity is associated with poverty and low social standing... except with black men. Fat black men are smarter and earn more money on average
  • Black jurors tend to acquit black criminals
  • Black Americans tend to put the blame on racism, prejudice or discrimination for any rejection from an outside group
  • Black men tend to fetishize white women
I have met some excellent black Americans. For example, my eighth grade teacher was quite pleasant and actively stood up for me in spite of my behavioral problems (I bullied other kids in elementary school).

I've also met my fair share of black Americans I'd rather not see again. For example, I was threatened by a black man, because my son apparently pushed his child at soccer practice when I was out walking. Rather than talking to the coach, he thought it was best to ruminate and stew on the problem, then confront me about it, ultimately telling me that if my son touches his son I'd have to deal with him. Several f-bombs were dropped near the kids too, and I don't want children hearing that language.

If anyone here has any anecdotes or advice they'd be willing to share, I'm all ears.

wow this is an interesting post! I hope it doesn't get censored or anything because it's a fair question. Me personally, I consider myself a fairly liberal guy...not woke, but definitely no where near the level of probably most people here. That being said, my interactions with black Americans specifically have been mostly negative. But I also 100% agree with you that it's just something we need to accept rather than get all into a rage about it. I tend to treat people as individuals first, but I'm not naive to think there is no such thing as group dynamics, or culture, or genetics at play. Hell, even among white people we have differences. Like, there's no way you can compare a white anglo guy of English background to say, an Italian-American from NYC. Mannerisms are different usually, speech patterns and even ways to react to things.

I've never noticed though what you say about fat black men. I've seen my fair share of poor fat black dudes, but maybe it's just my area.

I feel me and you have a lot in common because I also used to get in trouble in school. I don't know to what extend you did stuff, but I had a group going and we used to get into lots of trouble mostly because there was a kid in the class who had a hilarious last name and he had super thick glasses so ngl, it was fun for us to pick on him. My teachers were all white though and nobody cared about bullying in my school.

If we talk about anecdotes, I do have a couple myself mostly because some of my friends have gone through the "justice" system, they are white, and the justice system is absolutely corrupt. One of my friends got charged with theft of services and he was around blacks a lot through the whole process. It was miserable and blacks who had done far worse things often were treated better than whites who had done lesser stuff.

I appreciate the response justcruising. If I knew more about an individual, then I would treat a fair, honest or otherwise decent person decently. However, I think it's fair to say that if you don't know someone personally, then relying on group averages or stereotypes is not a bad option. Here's a link to all that would question my rationale: https://spsp.org/news-center/character- ... ffects-all.

When I was a tween, I used to watch pro-wrestling. I was much larger than the other boys at the private Christian school I attended (they were Baptists), so I would sometimes practice these wrestling moves on unwilling participants. I didn't hurt anyone badly, but many did not share in my enthusiasm for the WWF/WCW. Still, I imagine the bullying was quite tame compared to some stories you (or others) could share.

Also, I agree that the justice system is mostly a failure. Whether actual justice happens depends on where the crime is committed. In the case of the Karmelo Anthony sentencing, I think the judge in Frisco should have given a heavier sentence, though I suppose it would be lighter if the trial was... say in Atlanta, in a different courthouse. If trends persist, I think it would lead to vigilantism.

Anyways, please let me know if you see guides out there.
