Hello From Maryland!

Post by StudentDriver »

Hey everyone! My name is Thomas. I just turned 25 years old. Still currently in Uni! Went back to college in 2022. Now in Uni. The institution that I'm currently attending is UMGC. It is mainly an online university. Fortunately in the state of Maryland, UMGC is recognized as an official public Maryland uni. So I get to transfer my credits to other public MD Unis. One of the reasons why I am attending this Uni, is because the Uni offers a flexible schedule to register for courses. So I get to take my time to register for courses. And because of that, I'm able to pay off for my courses instantly. I'm so grateful that I'm debt free, and I'm grateful that I have had the time to pursue the things that matter. Back in 2022, making this decision really felt like a gamble, but looking back at it now and looking at the cost of higher education in America, I really do think it was a good decision. A lot of my friends are now in debt and can't find jobs to pay off that debt. Hopefully they wont stay in debt for too long, I can only imagine how stressful it is.

Anyway, my Major is in Computer Science, with a focus in machine learning, and a minor in applied mathematics (unfortunately, they don't offer pure math....However, I have been studying it on my own without realizing it, until I stumbled on Prof Cromwell's channel... and I really didn't make much of a distinction between applied and pure maths... but I kept asking and demanding for explanations from myself and from external resources. But not to brag, I think my own personal explanations are best. Hehe ). The field I'm currently aiming for is software engineering. But I really do like the field of Scientific Computing, where I get to solve high complexity problems, like managing and Multiplying massive multidimensional arrays = (concrete tensors not the definition of a mathematical tensor); these multidimensional arrays are generally used in physics, statistics, also used by engineers, etc! And when solving problems about tensors/ is related to solving certain polynomial type problems, get too hard to solve analytically, we apply numerical analysis to develop algorithms to approximate the solutions! Whoops went on a tangent. But it had to be said :D
(really cool stuff)

It seems like the majority of members on this forum come from a Christian background, more specifically y'all are catholics? Not only that, but raised in a Christian household? Personally for me, I am not raised in a Christian Household. I am raised in a secular household devoid of Christian Education; Now in my head, I equate Christian Education to Essential Education. Lmao. The reason why I equate these two education, is because Prof Cromwell did emphasize on broad education... Broad education here doesn't mean to study a multitude of super unrelated subjects, but rather, philosophy, history, theology are broad subjects in of themselves (ofc these are not the only things the Professor emphasized... but these three things really are swept under the rug in Public schools lmao ). So how did I reach to the conclusion that I personally need that "broadness," well I simply emphasized 3 simple things for my own personal sanity. They are: Philosophy, Mathematics, Science. I really had to go through some real crazy mental hoops to finally recognize these three things. And these three things really do emphasize on (HOW TO REASON). These three things really do set the standards for Pure Reasoning in of itself. And seeing how Professor Cromwell emphasize these 3 things + the other 2, I kinda do relate to him, that indeed there SHOULD be a handful of things to focus on. However, we can debate on what needs more emphasis. Though my parents claim they are Buddhist, but we don't really live it seriously. So I guess we are secular? Like Professor Cromwell said, there is a distinction between living a Christian life vs Discussing Christianity, thus I claim that I am not really Buddhist, because I don't live like one. I do claim that I am an Agnostic Atheist. I don't reject God. Words like God, I call them Sacred, because I am wary to make false definitions or draw false equivalences or outright dismiss them.

I registered on this forum to learn more about Professor Cromwell, Christian thinking, and last but not least, all the members here! Oh btw, I do have the autobiography from mathematchicken to mathematician. And I do relate to it a lot. However, an interesting difference between Professor Cromwell and I, is that I HATED algebra. Geometry was my way to entering into pure mathematics. Additionally, a substantial chunk of my intent on this forum, is to challenge y'all to a debate. xD

Hey! I'm not too too far from you, as I'm in NOVA area.

I can definitely relate to a lot of what you wrote. Going back to school a bit later and taking the cheaper route instead of chasing prestige can feel like a gamble at first, but with the cost of higher education these days, I think there is a lot to be said for staying debt-free and moving at a sustainable pace. It's refreshing to see someone who is actually thinking about the economics of education rather than just assuming more debt automatically means a better outcome. I've also got friends in debt and this country just really punishes people with debt, no forgiveness at all.

I also relate to the feeling of having to educate yourself outside the classroom, since many professors just do the bare minimum.

I personally don't come from a Catholic background. I grew up kind of agnostic, but the area around me was/is heavily Baptist as its the south. It's changing now though with immigration, so there's also now lots of Muslims and then Catholics moving in from up north mostly. I hope this forum accepts those of us who are NOT Christian. I do respect lots of stuff about Christianity, but I won't be attending church any time soon.

Yeah man, im not really sure about the laws here, but if it gets really bad, you can file for bankruptcy and you are forgiven? maybe.. idk what are the exact consequences for filing for bankruptcy.

"I hope this forum accepts those of us who are NOT Christian" <--- I dont think we need to worry about that... Because we should reflect on the following: "what are the conditions to be my people? Is it that they have to say the right things all the time? Well if they said the right things all the time then they will state my personal problems and precisely lay them out for me. Since they are not me, therefore they can't state my personal problems. So actually what makes my people is that "sometimes they say the right things..." and perhaps with some extra conditions xD
