What Do You Think About Abortion? - My Opinion.

It is my opinion that in an ideal and just society — abortion would have no need to exist. If people could afford to have children, and if they could guarantee that their child would be adopted into a caring family (if need be) there would be no question on the topic except in rare and very clear cases and so on and so on.

I agree that in the ideal world abortion would have no need to exist, and therefore it would be illegal and only done on the fringes of society. However, abortion is not just a reaction to socioeconomic or actionable conditions, but rather is a moral failure and moral evil at its core which leads to a murder of an innocent. Statistically, the vast majority of abortions (90%+) are done for “elective” reasons, which means that they were not due to rape or incest or genetic screening. They are usually done because the mother, along with sometimes the spouse, believes having a child will be a net negative economic decision, and therefore they choose to kill an innocent human. No human life is of lesser importance than that material wealth, and indeed for almost all of history people would have children during terrible times (people did not stop having children during WW2 because “they will grow up in a horrible world!”). All of this to say, in the actual ideal world the people must explicitly have the moral foundation and teaching to see abortion as unthinkable.

I feel that the false notion of "choice" stems from a lack of religious vocation within society. Once a woman's place in society stopped being view through a fundamentally Christian lens. Ordinarily, a woman would be called to the religious life as a sister in a convent, or to the lay life, and there was an understanding that lay women were expected to be mothers. Now, of course some women are not able to be mothers, for a number of different reasons, but this is something to be bemoaned, as the joy of motherhood is in this way taken away from her. Contrast this to today when there are millions of young women who just live in a big city and work 40+ hours a week for a corporation. I know that one should avoid drawing broad conclusions about people, but to be frank what kind of life is that? This is not to beat down on these people, but rather to acknowledge their sad state in life. We should be exhorting these women to something more, something that can glorify the name of God.

But, until we are willing to do that as a people, I don't find it surprising that people are engaging in the most diabolical acts imaginable. In modern society, "liberty" and "freedom" are marked as good and just in them of themselves. If we are to say that motherhood is some kind of tyranny, then it would really only make sense that women be exhorted to this kind of evil, even to the point that they might find "pride" in it.

If you believe that human life begins at conception, when sperm fertilizes and egg, then I don't see how anyone could not view abortion as killing an innocent person. Rape, incest or however an impregnation occurred doesn't justify murdering the unborn child. Even terminating a non-viable pregnancy is akin to euthanasia. This is especially important in the case of "designer" babies, where a lab tech would fertilize a few frozen eggs, then pick one for gestation and leave the rest to die.

In my opinion, the extreme view would be to view haploid life as precious. Sperm is technically alive and billions die naturally over your lifetime. Same goes for eggs. Every 30 days that's a dead haploid coming out.
