I would like to share my perspective here because I feel most of you will disagree, but it's my take on things. In the video you see an elderly woman being robbed by what looks to be to people some kind of North African. Everyone is angry and outraged, lots of people talking about his nationality or origins, but watching it, I keep thinking about something else. We live in a society that constantly tells people that what matters is what they own. Basically, your value is your income and possessions give you status. Why are we so shocked by the crime while accepting the conditions that produce so much desperation, and obsession with money? Also, speaking as a non-Christian, does it REALLY matter so much that he might be Muslim? I mean I'm no Muslim and don't have any expertise on religions, but I very much doubt Islam would justify robbing westerners as some comments claim. I also doubt that guy is religious at all. Like, if a white guy robs someone, we don't normally go after "Christians" or say "had to be a Christian".

If all we feel is outrage toward the man and no curiosity about the society that shaped him, we are only looking at the final scene, not the whole story. I doubt any of us know for sure what we would truly do if we had no money, or no job, or no way of supporting ourselves.

I think there is truth in what you are saying, but I would frame it somewhat differently.

A Christian should never lose sight of the humanity of the criminal. The man who robbed that woman is still made in the image of God. He is not merely a villain in a news clip, nor is he a statistic. He is a soul. As Christians, we should desire his repentance and restoration, not merely his punishment. This is where modern "conservatism" fails, as well as cheap "outrage" culture.

That said, our compassion must not come at the expense of moral clarity.

Many people today make the mistake of viewing criminals as either monsters or victims. The Christian doctrine rejects both extremes. Human beings possess free will and moral agency. Poverty, disorder, bad upbringing, and social decay can tempt a man toward evil, but they do not compel him to commit it. Countless poor people do not rob elderly women. I know plenty of poor Muslim youths (and even street urchins who wouldn't go as far as that!). They may misbehave, certainly, and be disrespectful (and I can't say I blame them looking at so many weak men in the West today), but they do not go around robbing and assaulting old ladies.

I also agree that modern society places an unhealthy emphasis on wealth and consumption. A civilization that teaches people to measure their worth by possessions should not be surprised when some begin pursuing possessions by unlawful means. In fact, that's precisely what our godless and evil governments do daily. The sickness is real. Yet the existence of a sickness in society does not absolve the individual who chooses to act unjustly. The young man who robbed the lady needs to face a consequence for his actions. It's not the possession that matters, it's the harm against the physical integrity of an innocent person who had done him no wrong.

At the same time, cultures and belief systems do matter. They shape people, families, and societies over generations. It is therefore reasonable to discuss cultural influences where relevant, provided we do so carefully and honestly rather than using them as a shortcut that relieves us of deeper thought.

In the end, I feel sympathy for both people in that video. I sympathize with the elderly woman who was wronged, and I sympathize with the thief insofar as he has become the sort of man who would commit such an act. But my sympathy for him does not change the fact that a grave wrong was committed and justice is owed. So, no, he can't just get away with this. I would allow two options in an ideal society: the victim herself can decide on if she wants restitution or criminal justice to proceed, and if she chooses the latter, I would support a brutal beating of the thief at the police station. This is how such things were dealt with in the past. He'd face no jail time IF the item was restored. I'd also ban the use of cameras used against law enforcement under the pretext of "free speech". That's a modernistic interpretation. Some people just really do need to be brought into the station and given a beating. Believe me, they'll think very long and hard before they ever do something like that again.
