Relationship between math and Christianity

I’m curious how people view the relationship between math and Christianity. Is math the language of the divine? Does studying math bring one closer to God, and is the mind of man truly capable of understanding creation (perhaps not as a whole, but in terms of how it functions through the laws of physics)? I sometimes think all three of these to be true but remain not fully convinced.

The bible does not directly address math as a field that I’m aware of. Non of the patriarchs, prophets, kings, or disciples were known to be mathematicians. Ancient Israel clearly had an understanding of numbers and arithmetic, but the pagan societies seemed to be more advanced mathematically, with Babylon having impressive astronomy and engineering, and later Greece giving birth to much of the fundamentals of math and logic that we use today.
I would never argue against objective reality or for the need of math to be useful to human engineering, but sometimes math struggles to show up directly in creation and serves more as a useful approximation rather than a description of the underlying reality. Newtonian physics seemed like the absolute law of the universe as if written by God himself, and it stayed this way for centuries after its discovery. However, anomalies began to appear where Newtonian physics simply got things wrong, such as calculations in the orbit of planet Mercury. This was resolved by Einstein’s equations of general relativity which are utilized today in astronomy or even technology such as GPS. The Newtonian equations can be extracted out of the relativistic ones as good approximations at sufficiently low velocities, but we now know that what appeared immutable was in fact an oversimplification. And relativistic equations likewise fail to describe interactions at the quantum level leading physicists on the hunt for the “equation of everything”, which has yet to be found. Man can comprehend math but has God written the universe to be comprehendible by man?
Even a simple triangle cannot be found in nature in its pure form, only approximates.
Isaiah 55:8-9 states “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” I think mathematicians must avoid getting arrogant as they master their field to think that they are somehow ascending to the level of God, and can look down upon this creation as if perched from above.
1 Corinthians 1:27 states “But God hath chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.”
1 Corinthians 3:18-20 states “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.”
Colossians 2:8 states “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” I don’t want to read into this something that is not there, but keep in mind at this time math was essentially philosophy, predominantly held by the Greek pagan society, and in today's world many mathematicians seem to be puffed up in vanity and led away from God. And many are using the fruits of mathematics to build technologies for the enslavement and destruction of mankind.

Overall I view math (and physics) as highly worthy fields of study with great benefits, but remain cautious against elevating it to a position it doesn’t belong, especially considering the inferiority of the human mind relative to the genius of the almighty God.

I think Christians make a mistake in two opposite directions.

Some dismiss mathematics as a merely worldly pursuit because it isn't explicitly discussed in Scripture. Others go to the opposite extreme and treat mathematics almost as a sacred path to God, as though solving differential equations grants access to divine truth. I find both views misguided, even if I personally believe that mathematics are a reflection of divine truths.

Mathematics is a tool of abstraction. It allows us to model aspects of reality with astonishing precision, but a model is not the thing itself. The history of physics demonstrates this repeatedly. Newton's laws appeared to reveal the very machinery of creation until they were discovered to be approximations within a larger framework. Relativity in turn appears incomplete when confronted with quantum phenomena. At every stage, human beings mistake a useful description for ultimate reality and are eventually humbled.

This pattern should encourage intellectual humility rather than triumphalism.

I would go even further and say that modern society often confuses mathematical sophistication with wisdom. A man may understand tensor calculus, design satellites, optimize financial markets, or build machine learning systems and yet remain a fool in every sense that Scripture cares about. The twentieth century was full of highly educated people who used science, engineering, and mathematics in the service of wars that went against our national interests, and mass destruction. Technical competence is not a safeguard against moral blindness.

In fact, Christianity has always contained a strong warning against confusing knowledge with wisdom. The Pharisees were learned. The scribes were educated. The Greeks prized philosophy. Yet Christ repeatedly showed that intellectual accomplishment alone does not bring a person closer to God.

That does not mean mathematics is bad. Quite the opposite. Mathematics reveals order, consistency, and intelligibility within creation. It is one of the most powerful tools mankind possesses for understanding how the world functions. But understanding how something functions is not the same as understanding its purpose, and purpose is ultimately the more important question.

A mathematician who studies creation with gratitude and humility may indeed be led toward wonder. A mathematician who studies creation in order to place himself above it is simply constructing a more sophisticated Tower of Babel. The danger is not mathematics. The danger is the perennial temptation to believe that because we have learned something profound about the world, we have therefore become wise. Scripture repeatedly teaches otherwise.

You made a distinction between Mathematics and Reality. Reminds me of Roger Penrose, a mathematical physicist. He is against string theory. He made a distinction between physics and mathematics! And Im not saying physics= Reality. Maybe his math senses are kinda like urs??

This here is the fundamental problem with education, they only teach HOW but never WHY.
There is no wisdom without understanding, one can know how (behavior/process/motion/succession/differentiation) without ever knowing why (meaning/form/space/simultaneity/integration). One can follow or predict the movements of the pencil without ever seeing the greater picture that is being drawn. To recognize how is to see that which does not change as everything else changes,whereas to recognize why is to see that it cannot be otherwise through pure necessity.

The simplest example of pure necessity is that of the statement "there is no truth" which denies it's own possibility of being true, thus through pure necessity truth is a reality.

This is the essence of Calculus to differentiate is to convert space as simultaneity into time as succession, and to integrate is to convert succession (time) back into simultaneity (space).
(we even see this time to space, space to time, conversion in computer science with complexity theory) Imagine it like this: the curved line is a road in it's integrated form, the differential is HOW you must turn the vehicle to traverse that road which is WHY one is turning.

In the same way the WHY is like a continuous finite magnitude such as the square root of 2, whereas the HOW is the endless process - the behavior used to represent that magnitude in terms of a lower order such as numerals. It is the same of the entire world, all the motion and occurrences of the world are the Symbolic expressions of some finite Being that cannot be fully expressed in terms of manifest experience, and it is through this overflow of Being into a process of becoming that we get the change and the impermanence we witness within the world.

It is like an oscilloscope art of a 3D object, the motion or process the HOW is reflective of some invariant formal WHY, if you slow down the art the cause or purpose becomes non-evident, one does not know what the motion is doing or why it is moving in such a way. we can get very good at predicting the motion as the physicists do, find some formula that's very accurate, but we have no clue what the motion is attempting to express, what the motion of the hand is attempting to draw.

I is in this way that the Platonists and Pythagoreans used geometry and number as a form of Symbolism. This is clearly evident in Proclus' statement about Euclid that "the whole of the geometer's argument is concerned with the cosmic figures", and by "cosmic figures", he means figures that belong to the order of the kosmos, that every proposition of geometry participates in cosmic order insofar as it expresses intelligible form. They saw mathematics as symbolic of a higher order, the laws of the permanent essence behind the impermanent appearances within existence.

I see math as the highest form of Symbolism because it does not vary with culture, and is highly rigorous.

Lot of good replies in here, lot to think about. Arthur C. Clarke said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. The replies here really echo much of what I've heard when discussing that quote with people. Perhaps the "sufficiently advanced technology" is mathematics and just in the same way as people argue that magic can be used for good or bad I always came back to "it's a technology."

That's all simply to say, if there's anything that really functions as "magic" it would have to be ordained by the mechanics of creation (and thus by God)
